Four-wheel drive will not engage
Selecting four-wheel drive does nothing, or the dashboard indicator flashes and gives up. The commonest cause on a road-used vehicle is not electrical but mechanical: transfer case actuators and shift mechanisms seize when they are never used, so the vehicle least likely to have working four-wheel drive is the one that has never needed it. Worth distinguishing from the opposite and more damaging fault — a system stuck in four-wheel drive, which binds the driveline on dry tarmac and shows up as juddering on full lock at low speed.

What this usually means
The commonest cause on a road-used vehicle is not electrical but mechanical: things seize when they are never used. Transfer case actuators, shift forks and linkages spend years in one position, in road spray and salt, and then are asked to move for the first time in a snowfall. So the vehicle least likely to have working four-wheel drive is the one that has never needed it — which is exactly the vehicle whose owner discovers it on the morning they do.
The module needs confirmation, not just a command, and that is why the indicator flashes rather than simply lighting. An encoder or position sensor at the actuator reports whether the transfer case actually reached the requested range; a flashing indicator that gives up means the command went out and the confirmation never came back. That could be the motor, the sensor, the fork, or the case binding — and the lamp cannot tell them apart.
Do not condemn the motor first. The published diagnostic order is battery voltage, fuses, earths, connector pins, scan data, fluid level, then mechanical binding — and only then the actuator. A weak battery alone produces this, because the actuator is a high-current device.
Cold makes a marginal actuator worse in a specific way: the grease in its gear train congeals, so engagement slows and the module times out waiting. A system that works in summer and fails in winter is a real pattern rather than coincidence.
