What to do

Do not ignore this one and hope a motorway run fixes it. Past this point the vehicle will refuse to regenerate on its own, so driving further simply adds soot to a filter that is already too full — the opposite of what a long drive normally achieves.

Book it in reasonably promptly. A filter at this stage can usually be recovered with a forced regeneration on diagnostic equipment, which is a modest cost. Left for weeks it becomes a removal-and-clean or a replacement, which is not.

Be ready to talk about how the car is used. If most journeys are short, this will keep happening, and the useful outcome of the visit is a plan for that — not just a filter emptied once.

Check the oil level and mention it if it is above maximum, since repeated failed regenerations dilute the oil with diesel.

What this code means

The particulate filter holds more soot than the system is willing to attempt to burn off.

Soot is the burnable kind of blockage, which makes this code fundamentally more hopeful than the ash version of it. The material trapped here can be removed — but not by the vehicle itself, not any more. Above a threshold the module refuses to start a regeneration, because burning that much soot at once generates enough heat to melt the substrate.

So the vehicle has locked itself into a state it cannot exit unaided. It will not regenerate because the filter is too full, and the filter stays too full because it will not regenerate. A forced regeneration performed with diagnostic equipment, under supervision, is the normal way out — and the reason it needs equipment is precisely that it needs watching.

How it got here is the part worth diagnosing, because a filter that fills faster than it burns is usually reporting an upstream problem.

  • A driving pattern of short cold journeys, which is the commonest explanation by a wide margin.
  • Ignored warnings, where a regeneration was requested repeatedly and never given the conditions to run.
  • An engine producing more soot than it should — worn injectors, a failing turbocharger, or an EGR valve stuck open.

If the filter has passed the point where a forced regeneration is safe, the honest answer is removal and cleaning or replacement. Attempting a forced burn on a filter that is too far gone is how a repairable filter becomes a melted one.
