U02A3: Lost Communication With Particulate Matter Sensor

What to do

Nothing will feel wrong, and that is the point of this one. The car drives normally; what has stopped is the sensor that proves the particulate filter is working.

The practical consequence is a failed emissions test rather than a failed engine. Without this sensor the self-checks never finish, so the test fails on incomplete readiness even though the car is running perfectly. If a test is due, fix this first.

Ask for the wiring and connector under the vehicle to be checked before the sensor is replaced. It sits in the exhaust behind the filter, so its cabling lives in heat, salt and road spray — much the commonest reason one of these goes quiet.

Mention any history of particulate filter warnings or interrupted regeneration drives. Repeated failed regenerations foul this sensor early, and then the sensor is the symptom rather than the fault.

What this code means

The soot sensor downstream of the particulate filter has stopped being heard from. The family's framing is at U0100.

This sensor exists to answer one question, and knowing which one explains everything about this code: is the particulate filter still doing its job?

It sits after the filter and measures what got through. Two electrodes with a gap between them collect soot from the passing exhaust; as soot bridges them the resistance falls, and the rate at which it falls is a measure of how much particulate is escaping. When it has collected enough it heats itself to several hundred degrees, burns itself clean, and starts again — so the sensor spends its life in cycles rather than reading continuously.

Which means it is a talkative sensor with its own heater, its own timing and its own controller, and that is why it appears on the network at all rather than as two wires to the engine module.

The consequence of losing it is not a driveability problem — it is a test problem, and that surprises people. The filter's efficiency monitor cannot run without this sensor, so the readiness monitors never complete. The vehicle drives perfectly and fails an emissions test on incomplete readiness, which is a very different conversation from failing on emissions.

Where it fails: the sensor is bolted into the exhaust behind the filter, so its wiring runs under the vehicle through heat, salt and road debris, and its connector is a standing suspect. Repeated failed regenerations coat it faster than designed, which is worth knowing because it points at a filter problem rather than a sensor one.
