Toyota 4Runner

The body-on-frame SUV, sold in Japan as the Hilux Surf — search both names, because the Japanese-market Surf carries a diesel the North American 4Runner never had. The fifth generation ran essentially unchanged from 2009 to 2024 on one engine, which makes it unusually well understood: almost every fault on one has been seen many times. Four-wheel-drive versions split between part-time and full-time systems with a locking centre differential, and which one a car has changes what a driveline code means.

Generations

  • First generation (N60) 1984–1989

A short-bed Hilux with the cab rear wall removed and a bolt-on fibreglass top; mechanically it is the pickup. The 2.4 petrol runs either the carburetted 22R or the injected 22R-E, and which one a car has decides every fuel-system diagnosis on it.

  • Second generation (N120/N130) 1989–1995

A full steel body on the Hilux frame rather than a cap on a pickup bed, and the first five-door. The 3VZ-E V6 of these years has a well-known head-gasket history the later 5VZ does not, and the Japanese-market 1KZ diesels were never sold where the North American car went.

  • Third generation (N180) 1995–2002

An all-new body on an all-new chassis, sharing engines and gearboxes with the Tacoma and its frame with the Land Cruiser Prado. The 5VZ-FE leaves the 3VZ-E head-gasket reputation behind, and in Japan the indirect-injection 1KZ-TE gives way to the common-rail 1KD-FTV in 2000.

Service information

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
