Toyota's 2.7 petrol four — in the Tacoma, Hilux, 4Runner, Fortuner and the Land Cruiser Prado.
It is the petrol engine in vehicles most of the world buys as diesels, and its reputation is the one Toyota's truck engines generally have: unexciting, long-lived, and rarely the reason a vehicle is retired.
Its recurring items are ordinary and few. The timing chain is a lifetime component in principle and stretches in practice on very high mileage, giving a rattle on a cold start. The ignition coils fail individually and give a misfire under load before one at idle.
The valve clearances are adjusted by shim, not hydraulically, so they need checking at interval — an item that owners of modern engines have stopped expecting, and one whose neglect shows as a tappet noise that will not go away and eventually as a burnt valve.
Later versions added variable valve timing on both cams, and the actuator on those can rattle briefly at start-up; that noise is the actuator rather than the chain, and the two are told apart by how long it lasts.
