Cause
Faulty ignition switch
A switch with separate contacts for separate circuits, which do not fail together. So a fully lit dashboard on a car that will not run is a normal picture for this fault — and "it obviously has power" is what gets fuel pumps fitted first.
The run-and-start contact is often dropped during cranking to give the starter current, so losing that line makes the engine fire and die as the key springs back.
Typically a moderate job.
