Faulty motor position sensor
The resolver reporting each motor's rotor angle — the signal the inverter cannot commutate without, making this the electric drive's equivalent of the crankshaft position sensor. When the angle is lost, electric drive stops rather than degrades; on full hybrids a generator resolver fault can stop the engine starting, since the generator is what spins it.
The sensor itself almost never fails. It is a passive transformer arrangement with no electronics, sealed inside the transaxle precisely because it tolerates heat and oil indefinitely. What fails is the harness carrying its faint signals to the inverter — which is why this cause sits below the wiring on every code that lists both, and why a resolver should only be condemned after the harness has been tested under load. Replacement means opening the transaxle: the expensive conclusion, reached last.
