Physical damage from road debris
Stones, salt, water and grit thrown up by the wheels, and the impacts of anything lying in the road. It concentrates on a narrow band of the vehicle — low, forward-facing and unprotected — and that is what makes it a useful diagnosis rather than a vague one.
Sensors mounted ahead of the radiator, in the lower bumper, or on the underside are in the line of fire in a way that nothing in the engine bay is. So for those specific parts, mechanical damage and corroded, salt-eaten connectors are ordinary findings rather than unusual ones, and inspecting the part and its wiring before condemning either is genuinely likely to pay.
Where a vehicle is driven changes the odds sharply, which is worth asking about: winter road salt, unsurfaced roads and repeated kerb contact all accelerate it, and damage lands disproportionately on the side of the car nearer the kerb. A fault that keeps returning on the same side is often about where the vehicle lives rather than about the quality of the part.
Two consequences follow. A damaged loom in this area rarely fails cleanly — it corrodes progressively, so the fault is intermittent and weather-dependent long before it becomes permanent. And a repair that leaves the replacement part exposed the same way buys only time; rerouting, re-sleeving or shielding is part of fixing it properly.
