U0088: Vehicle Communication Bus F (-) Shorted to Bus F (+)
What to do
Expect equipment on the converted part of the vehicle to have stopped completely rather than working badly.
The two wires carrying this network are touching each other, which cancels the signal entirely.
One test confirms it with no manufacturer data at all: near zero ohms across the pair, which is wrong on every network there is.
And there is a free test worth doing before anything is taken apart: unload the vehicle, disconnect the body equipment, and measure again.
If the reading changes when the load comes off, the fault is wherever that load was pressing. On a working vehicle these faults are mechanical rather than electrical — a loom crushed by a load or a strap, pierced by a fixing, or damaged where the wiring crosses between the chassis and the body.
That is a short list and a quick search, and it is quite different from the slow corrosion that causes the same fault on a car.
Go back to whoever converted the vehicle; the join between their wiring and the manufacturer's is where this usually is.
What this code means
The two lines of vehicle communication bus F are shorted together. See U0009 for why joining a differential pair cancels the signal completely, and U0036 for why this is the one fault on a lettered bus that needs no manufacturer data to confirm.
This code closes the decimal enumeration of the bus physical layer, and one numbering note belongs here because it prevents a fruitless search. The Vehicle Communication Bus family runs A to F in the decimal numbering and no further — bus G has only a withdrawal code, at U0079, and its electrical variants sit in the letter-suffixed layer outside this corpus's enumeration. A scan tool naming a bus G wiring fault is reporting something these pages do not cover, though the reasoning still applies to it.
On a converted vehicle the causes are mechanical and the list is short, and it is the same one as U0082's: the join between chassis and body wiring; the flex point where the two move against each other; the underbody run, where road debris and load-securing gear reach it; and any point a load is strapped or chained down.
Two wires crushed together by a load or pierced by a fixing is the ordinary way this happens on a working vehicle — not corrosion, and not age.
Which makes the free test worth doing before anything is dismantled: unload the vehicle, disconnect the body equipment, and re-measure. Near zero ohms across the pair is wrong on every network there is, and if the reading changes when the load comes off, the fault has been located to whatever the load was pressing on.
