P015A: O2 Sensor Delayed Response - Rich to Lean Bank 1 Sensor 1
What to do
This one is worth fixing sooner than the downstream sensor faults. This sensor is what the engine uses to control the fuel mixture, so while it responds late the engine runs less efficiently and the catalytic converter is being fed a mixture swinging wider than it should.
Expect worse fuel consumption, and mention it if you have noticed any.
Ask whether the engine is using oil or coolant. This is the first sensor to be poisoned by either, and a replacement fitted into the same exhaust will fail the same way — so the cause matters as much as the sensor.
Mention any recent engine work involving sealant. Non-approved silicone sealant poisons oxygen sensors and is a known cause of early failure.
What this code means
The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is not beginning its rich-to-lean transition when it should.
Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor, before the catalytic converter, and that changes the severity of this fault entirely. The downstream codes in this family affect emissions monitoring. This one affects emissions control — the upstream sensor is what the module trims the fuelling from, in a loop running many times a second.
A sensor that reports late makes the module correct late, so the fuelling oscillates further either side of correct than it should. The engine still runs, and it runs worse than it needs to: economy falls, the converter is fed a mixture swinging wider than it was designed for, and long-term fuel trims drift to compensate for a lag rather than for a real mixture error.
So this is worth fixing rather than tolerating, and it degrades other things while it is left.
The causes are the family's, with one addition specific to the upstream position. This sensor sits closest to the engine and takes the full force of anything the engine sends downstream — coolant from a weeping head gasket, oil past worn valve stem seals, or fuel from a leaking injector. It is the first sensor to be poisoned and the first to report it.
A premature upstream sensor failure is worth treating as a symptom. Ask what reached it, because a replacement fitted into the same exhaust meets the same contamination.
