Metal debris on the sensor tip
Swarf collected on a magnetic speed or position sensor, distorting the signal it reads from the toothed ring. The sensor tests fine on the bench and is often replaced twice, because the debris goes back on the new one — and debris in a gearbox means something inside is wearing.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.
