P02E8: Diesel Intake Air Flow A Position Sensor Circuit Low
What to do
Ask whether other sensor faults are stored at the same time. Several sensors often share one reference supply, and a single fault there sets a page of codes that all clear together — so it is worth checking before parts are replaced one by one.
Ask for the connector to be checked for oil contamination. This valve sits where oil mist from the engine breather collects, and oil wicking into the connector is a common cause here.
The car will usually drive normally, but emissions control and particulate filter regeneration will be compromised, so it is worth fixing rather than leaving.
Mention if the engine shudders when switched off, which suggests the valve itself is not working as well as the sensor that watches it.
What this code means
The position sensor on the diesel intake air flow valve is reading below its valid range.
This is the feedback half of the valve rather than the drive half, and the distinction is the diagnosis. The control circuit tells the valve where to go; the position sensor reports where it actually went. A fault here does not stop the valve moving — it stops the module knowing whether it moved.
And a module that cannot confirm position will not trust the valve. Expect it to default the valve to a safe state and disable what depends on it: exhaust gas recirculation stops, particulate filter regeneration may be inhibited, and the engine will usually still drive normally while quietly not controlling its emissions.
A signal reading low points at a short to ground, an open in the signal wire, or a failed sensor element. The reference supply is worth checking early — if the five-volt feed shared with other sensors has collapsed, this sensor reads low along with several others, and a page of unrelated sensor codes with one supply fault underneath is a pattern this corpus documents repeatedly.
Read every stored code before starting. Fixing a shared reference clears them all at once; chasing them individually wastes a great deal of time.
