What to do

Start with the spark plugs and the ignition, because on this system they are the sensor as well as the spark. The engine measures combustion by passing a small current through the spark plug gap after each spark — so worn plugs, an incorrect plug specification or the wrong resistor rating upset the measurement before they upset the running.

Say when the plugs were last changed and whether the correct ones were fitted. Cheaper equivalents are a genuine and common cause here, in a way they are not on most engines.

Expect the car to feel slightly less crisp and to use a little more fuel. With its best measurement of combustion missing, the engine takes conservative settings until it is fixed.

Mention any misfire or rough running, even briefly, since this system exists to detect exactly that and its failure often arrives alongside the thing it was meant to find.

What this code means

The ion sensing system is not producing usable measurements.

Ion sensing is the most elegant trick in engine management, and it is worth explaining properly because almost nobody meets it by name. The spark plug is used as a sensor between sparks.

Burning fuel is electrically conductive. The flame front strips electrons from the molecules in it, so a cylinder that is combusting contains charged particles that a cylinder full of inert gas does not. So after the spark has finished, a small voltage is applied across the very same plug gap and the current that flows is measured. No current means nothing is burning. A strong, well-shaped current trace means a healthy flame — and its exact shape says when the pressure peaked, whether the burn was fast or slow, and whether knock is present.

What that replaces is the point. An engine with ion sensing needs no knock sensor, and can detect a misfire directly rather than inferring one from crankshaft speed — and it gets both from hardware it already has, one plug at a time, cylinder by cylinder. A crankshaft-based misfire monitor cannot tell which of two adjacent cylinders failed at high speed; ion sensing simply knows.

And this is where the corpus's own numbering has something to say. The main ion-sensing block sits far away at the top of P28xx, alongside the dual clutch codes, because the standard allocated it long after this code was written. A vehicle showing this code and an ion current code in the P28xx range is describing one system, and nothing in either number suggests it.

The practical consequence of a performance fault: the engine loses its finest instrument and falls back on coarser ones. Expect conservative ignition timing, a misfire monitor that reports less precisely, and — since the measurement runs through the coil and the plug — an ordinary ignition service as the first thing to check. Worn plugs with a wide gap, the wrong plug specification, or a plug with the wrong resistor value change the measurement before they change the spark.
