Be wary of a repair that consists of clearing the code and resetting the adaptation. This fault means the engine module has run out of adjustment for a valve that carbon has gradually shifted — resetting it does not change the valve, and the fault returns within a few hundred miles.

Ask for the valve to be cleaned. The cause is deposits rather than a broken part, so cleaning often genuinely fixes it and is far cheaper than a new valve.

Ask whether a relearn is needed afterwards, since most vehicles require one and skipping it leaves the fault looking unfixed.

This has been developing for a long time rather than appearing suddenly, so it is worth asking what the driving pattern should be afterwards — regular longer runs keep the valve much cleaner.

What this code means

The adaptation the module keeps for the EGR valve's rest position has reached the end of its range.

This is an adaptation code rather than a failure code, and the distinction is the useful part. An EGR valve does not sit at exactly the same closed position for its whole life. Deposits build on the seat, the pintle wears, and the mechanical zero shifts slightly. The module learns that shift and compensates, so the valve keeps controlling accurately as it ages.

This code says the learning has run out. The valve's rest position has moved further than the adaptation is permitted to follow — so the module can no longer be sure that closed means closed.

Which makes it a maturity marker rather than a sudden fault. Everything worked until the compensation was exhausted, so the deposits have been building for a long time and the code is the end of that process, not the start.

This is the same shape as the injector offset-learning family, and it carries the same warning: clearing the code and resetting the adaptation is not a repair. The valve is unchanged, so the adaptation walks straight back to its limit — usually within a few hundred miles.
