What to do
Ask whether the EGR valve itself has been checked, not just the sensor. This sensor reports where the valve actually is — so a valve stuck with carbon makes a perfectly good sensor report a mismatch. Replacing the sensor in that case fixes nothing.
Ask whether the valve can be cleaned, since carbon is the usual underlying cause and these valves are expensive.
Ask whether an EGR position relearn is needed after the repair. Many vehicles require one, and skipping it leaves the fault looking unfixed.
Mention any rough idle, hesitation or black smoke, which all point at the valve rather than the sensor.
What this code means
The EGR position sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but does not fit what the valve is doing.
This sensor is the module's only way of knowing where the valve actually went, as opposed to where it was told to go — and that feedback is what makes an electric EGR valve controllable at all.
Range/performance means the number is plausible and wrong, and there are two quite different reasons for that.
- The sensor has drifted or its track is worn. Many of these are resistive potentiometers, and the wiper spends most of its life at the closed position — so that spot wears first, which is why faults so often appear around the closed end of travel rather than across the whole range.
- The sensor is honest and the valve is not moving. Carbon has bound the pintle, so the commanded position and the reported position genuinely differ. The sensor is reporting a real failure.
That second case is the common one on a diesel, and it is worth stating plainly because replacing the sensor achieves nothing. The valve is the fault; the sensor is the messenger.
A cheap check separates them. Watch commanded against actual position while the valve is swept through its range. A sensor fault shows as a signal that jumps or flat-spots; a bound valve shows as a signal that lags smoothly and never reaches the ends.
Many vehicles need an EGR position relearn after cleaning or replacement, and skipping it leaves the fault apparently unfixed.
