What to do
Ask for the breather system to be checked, not just the sensor. This sensor measures pressure inside the engine, and a blocked breather or a torn oil separator produces an honest reading — the sensor is reporting a real problem, and that problem pushes oil past the crankshaft seals if it is left.
Mention any oil leaks that have appeared recently, or oil being used with no visible leak. Both fit, and which one is happening genuinely narrows the diagnosis.
Ask for the sensor's connector to be checked for oil contamination, which is common in that location and often the whole repair.
Do not dismiss it because the car drives normally. This is one of the few sensors that can give early warning of engine wear, and the repairs it prevents are large ones.
What this code means
The crankcase pressure sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but does not fit.
Measuring crankcase pressure directly is a newer approach than checking whether the breather hose is plugged in, and it catches far more. A healthy engine runs its crankcase at a slight depression — a little below atmospheric — which is what stops blow-by gas pushing oil out through the seals.
A sensor watching that pressure can detect several faults that previously had none of their own:
- A blocked breather or oil separator, which lets pressure build.
- A torn separator diaphragm, which lets the intake pull far too hard.
- A split or disconnected hose, which brings the crankcase to atmospheric.
- And, over time, worn piston rings — because blow-by rises as an engine wears, and this sensor measures blow-by directly.
Range/performance means the reading is present and not credible. The cheap proof: with the engine off, the crankcase must be at atmospheric pressure, and this sensor must agree with the barometric sensor. One that reports a depression on a stationary engine has identified itself.
Do not assume the sensor is wrong. A genuinely blocked breather produces an honest reading, and that reading is the early warning of oil being pushed past the crankshaft seals — a far larger repair than the sensor.
Check the connector for oil, which is the location's characteristic contamination.
