P04FC: Crankcase Ventilation System Performance

What to do

Mention any oil leaks that have appeared recently, or oil being used with no visible leak. Both fit this fault — the crankcase pressure being wrong either pushes oil out through the seals or pulls it into the intake — and which one is happening genuinely helps the diagnosis.

Ask for the oil separator to be checked, not just the valve and hoses. It usually contains a diaphragm that tears with age, and it is the part most often at fault and most often overlooked.

Mention if this appeared in cold weather and if the car does mostly short journeys. Moisture condenses in the breather system and can freeze, which blocks it completely and needs no parts once understood.

Do not leave it. Wrong crankcase pressure pushes oil past the crankshaft seals — replacing those is a far bigger job than replacing a breather part.

What this code means

The crankcase ventilation system is not maintaining the conditions the module expects.

Unlike the connection codes beside it, this one is about function rather than presence. The hose is plugged in; the system is simply not evacuating the crankcase properly.

A healthy engine runs its crankcase at a slight depression — a little below atmospheric — which is what stops blow-by gas pushing oil out through the seals. This code says that depression is wrong, in one direction or the other, and both are worth understanding because they fail differently.

Too little depression means blow-by is accumulating. Pressure rises and pushes oil past the crankshaft seals and the dipstick tube, which presents as unexplained oil leaks from an engine that was previously dry. A blocked separator, a frozen breather in winter, or a PCV valve stuck shut all cause it.

Too much depression is the less obvious failure and it does its own damage. A PCV valve stuck open pulls hard on the crankcase, which can draw oil into the intake, collapse the dipstick seal, and in extreme cases suck the crankshaft seals inwards — so an engine suddenly using oil with no external leak can be this.

The oil separator is the part most often at fault and the one most often overlooked. It is a chamber, usually with a diaphragm, that removes oil mist before the gas returns to the intake. The diaphragm tears with age, and a torn one produces exactly this.

Frozen breathers are a real winter cause on short-journey cars, where moisture condenses and freezes in the pipework.
