Visible oil leak

Oil on the driveway, on the underside of the engine, or a level that falls between services. Before chasing seals, it is worth knowing that an engine builds pressure inside its crankcase and is designed to breathe that pressure away; when the breathing system blocks or a hose comes adrift, the pressure has to leave somewhere, and it leaves past the seals. That is why several leaks appearing at once usually means one fault rather than several, and why replacing a seal on such an engine simply moves the leak to the next weakest one.

Before chasing seals, it is worth knowing that an engine builds pressure inside its crankcase and is designed to breathe that pressure away. When the breathing system blocks or a hose comes adrift, the pressure has to leave somewhere, and it leaves past the seals.

That is why several leaks appearing at once usually means one fault rather than several, and why replacing a seal on such an engine simply moves the leak to the next weakest one. A car that has had a rear main seal, then a sump gasket, then a cam cover, in that order, has had three symptoms of one unrepaired cause.

So measure crankcase pressure before quoting seal work. A manometer on the dipstick tube should show a slight depression at idle — roughly 10 to 30 mbar depending on manufacturer. A cap blown off, or sucked hard onto the filler, is a fault in either direction, and both are quicker to find than any leak.

Then find the leak properly rather than by inspection. Oil spreads along the underside and drips from the lowest point, which is rarely where it came from. Clean the area, dust with talc or use a dye and an ultraviolet lamp, then run it — that finds the source in one attempt where looking finds the drip.

Judge severity by rate and by destination. A weep that leaves a film costs oil slowly; a leak onto a hot exhaust manifold is a fire risk, and one onto a drive belt or an alternator is a breakdown waiting to happen. Those two are worth acting on regardless of how little oil is being lost.

  • Several leaks at once, or a new leak after a seal was replaced

    Repair urgently and clean the manifold and heat shields. This one is not a monitor-and-see.
  • Oil on a drive belt or the alternator

    A leak contaminating something that will fail because of it

    Inspect the belt for swelling and slipping and the alternator for oil ingress.
    What fixes it
    Repair the leak and renew the contaminated belt. An oiled belt slips and then breaks.
  • A weep that leaves a film but no drips

    A minor seal or gasket seep — real but slow
    How to confirm it
    Monitor the level over several weeks rather than reacting immediately. Rate decides urgency.
    What fixes it
    Repair at the next convenient service unless it reaches a hot or moving part.
  • Leak appeared immediately after a service

    Likely cause
    A sump plug or filter seal — the commonest post-service leak and the quickest to check
    How to confirm it
    Check the plug torque and the filter seal, including that the old seal came away with the old filter.
    What fixes it
    Reseal correctly. A doubled filter seal is a classic and it can lose all the oil quickly.
