P0586: Cruise Control Vent Control Circuit Open
What to do
Driveable; cruise control will not hold a speed. The design releases the throttle when this circuit fails rather than holding it, which is why the failure is an inconvenience rather than a hazard.
What this code means
An open circuit on the cruise control vent solenoid. The vent valve releases vacuum from the servo, letting the throttle return — so it is the half of the pair responsible for reducing speed and for disengaging.
On these systems the vent valve is designed to open when de-energised, so a loss of power to it releases the servo rather than holding it. That is deliberate fail-safe design, and it is why an open circuit here disables cruise control rather than leaving the throttle held.
