Ask whether this engine's oil pump defaults to high or low pressure when the control fails. It is the question that decides how urgent this is — most default to high, which is safe but wastes fuel; some do not, and that is serious.

If the oil pressure warning light comes on at any point, stop the engine immediately and do not restart it. That lamp is a direct measurement and it matters more than any fault code. Running an engine without oil pressure destroys it in seconds.

Check your oil level yourself and top it up if it is low. It is the cheapest protection available while you arrange a repair.

Mention any change in engine noise, particularly a ticking or rattling from the top of the engine, which can indicate low oil pressure.

What this code means

The circuit controlling engine oil pressure is open.

Many modern engines no longer have a fixed-output oil pump. A variable-displacement pump, controlled by a solenoid the module commands, delivers only the pressure the engine currently needs — low at idle and light load to save the power a fixed pump wastes, high under load or at high temperature.

This code says the module cannot command it. The circuit is open, so the solenoid is unpowered.

What happens next depends entirely on the pump's default state, and that is the crucial question. Most are designed to fail to high pressure, because too much oil is survivable and too little is not. But this is a design choice rather than a law, and on an engine that defaults low, an open circuit is genuinely serious.

So establish which way this engine fails before deciding how urgent this is. It is the difference between wasted fuel and a damaged engine.

Watch the oil pressure warning light rather than this code. If the oil pressure warning lamp is on, stop the engine immediately — that lamp is a direct measurement and it outranks any diagnostic code.

The causes are ordinary electrical ones: a corroded connector, a chafed wire, or the solenoid itself failed open. The solenoid sits low on the engine in oil and road spray, so its connector suffers accordingly.
