Oil Pump
Circulates oil under pressure so the crankshaft and camshaft ride on a film of oil rather than on metal. Rarely fails outright; far more often the pressure loss blamed on it comes from a blocked pickup strainer, a stuck pressure relief valve, oil of the wrong grade, or bearings worn enough that the clearances no longer hold pressure. On engines that do many short journeys, oil diluted with fuel from repeated incomplete particulate filter regenerations produces the same result from perfectly healthy hardware.
