P0782: 2-3 Shift Malfunction
What to do
Note whether the revs flare between second and third or whether the change bangs — those are different faults. A 2-3 change that has become poor while everything else feels fine is often an early sign rather than a late one, so it is worth acting on.
What this code means
The change from second to third did not complete correctly. The flare-versus-tie-up distinction described under P0781 applies unchanged and is worth making here too.
What is particular to the 2-3 change on many transmissions is that it is the first shift where a clutch releases and another applies simultaneously without a one-way clutch to smooth the handover. Lower shifts often have that mechanical assistance and this one does not, which makes 2-3 the change most sensitive to timing being slightly wrong — and the first to complain when fluid or pressure has begun to drift.
