P084F: Park/Neutral Switch Output Circuit
What to do
If the car will not crank, do not assume the starter motor. This fault sits in the circuit that tells the vehicle it is safe to start, and a car that cranks in no position at all is very often this rather than anything expensive.
Try selecting neutral and starting from there — on many vehicles that uses a different path and will get you going, which is worth knowing on a cold morning.
If the engine will crank while the car is in gear, treat that as urgent and do not leave it. That is the safety interlock not working, and a vehicle that can start in gear can move when the key is turned.
Mention any other oddities that arrived at the same time — stop-start no longer working, a reverse camera that does not appear, an odd idle. They share this signal, and the fact that they arrived together is useful evidence.
What this code means
The circuit by which a module outputs the park or neutral state to something else is faulty. The switch itself, and what it is for, is at P0850.
The distinction between an input code and an output code is the whole of this page, and it is a genuinely useful one to hold. P0850 and its neighbours are about the signal arriving at a module. This code is about the signal leaving one — the module has read the switch, believes it, and is now passing that state onward as its own output. So a fault here sits after the switch, and the switch may be perfect.
What consumes that output explains why it exists at all: the starter circuit. A vehicle must not crank in gear, and the interlock that guarantees it is often driven by a module rather than by the switch directly, so that the same information can also reach the engine module, the instrument cluster and the stability system. This output is that interlock.
Which gives the fault two opposite and equally recognisable presentations:
- The interlock stuck open — the vehicle will not crank at all, in any position of the selector, and the starter is entirely innocent. This is the version that arrives on a recovery truck, diagnosed as a starter motor.
- The interlock stuck closed — the vehicle cranks whatever gear it is in. That is the dangerous direction, and it is the reason the circuit is monitored at all.
A third consequence is quieter and worth knowing: several systems use park or neutral as a permission. Idle strategy, stop-start, some charging behaviours and the reverse camera all depend on it, so a vehicle that starts and drives normally may still show a scatter of unrelated oddities.
Test before replacing. The switch, the module output and the wiring between them are three different repairs at three very different prices, and the code names only the last leg of the path.
