Transmission Range Sensor
Reports which position the gear selector is in — park, reverse, neutral, drive — to the transmission module, the starter interlock, the reverse lights and the selector display. Because so many unrelated things read the same switch, its failure produces a distinctive cluster: the engine cranks in neutral but not park, the reverse lights stop working, the display shows the wrong gear, and shifts turn harsh. On many gearboxes it is externally mounted and deliberately adjustable so its electrical centre can be aligned to the mechanical detents, which means a slipped sensor or a stretched linkage produces a fault code with no component failure at all.
