The engine will not start, though the car may still move on electric power. Do not let anybody fit a starter motor before the hybrid system has been read — most hybrids start the engine with the traction motor and have no starter at all. Getting the twelve-volt battery tested is a sensible first step; after that this is a high-voltage diagnosis.

What this code means

The engine was commanded to start and did not turn.

On a hybrid this code means something almost opposite to what it says, and the misunderstanding is expensive.

Most hybrids have no starter motor. The engine is spun up by one of the traction machines — the motor-generator — through the transaxle, at several hundred volts. There is no solenoid, no pinion, no ring gear engagement, and frequently no twelve-volt starter circuit at all. Some vehicles keep a conventional starter as a cold-weather backup; many do not.

So "failed to crank" on this car is a high-voltage fault, not a starting-system fault. The chain is: the traction battery must have charge and be able to deliver current, the contactors must close, the inverter must work, and the generator must produce torque. A break anywhere along it produces this code, and none of those parts is a starter.

The failure mode to name plainly is a starter motor being fitted to a car that never had one, or a twelve-volt battery being replaced because the symptom sounds familiar. The twelve-volt battery is genuinely worth checking first — not because it cranks the engine, but because the modules that command the start need it, and a weak one stops the sequence before it begins. That is the cheap check; after it, the diagnosis moves to the high-voltage side.
