What to do
Check the battery warranty before anything else — these packs are covered for eight years or more in many markets, and this code inside the window is the manufacturer's problem, not yours. If out of warranty, ask for the per-block battery report and whether one weak module explains it before agreeing to a whole pack; and have the cooling fan cleaned regardless, because heat is what caused this and will cause it again.
What this code means
The battery module has measured the pack ageing past its threshold. This is the most expensive code most hybrid owners will ever meet, which is exactly why it deserves the corpus's slowest reading.
Deterioration is designed-for, and the code is a threshold, not a failure. Every traction battery loses capacity and gains internal resistance with age; the module tracks both and stores this code when the numbers cross a line — the fluid-life argument of P0897, on the costliest part of the car. Nothing snapped the day the light came on.
What is actually measured is divergence. The pack is dozens of cell groups in series, and the module watches each group's voltage under load. An aged pack does not fail evenly: one or two groups sag first, harder and sooner than their siblings. That has two consequences worth money. First, the characteristic symptom — the charge display swinging from full to empty and back within minutes — is real: the weakest group defines the whole pack's usable window, so the gauge lurches between limits that have moved close together. The engine starting and stopping far more than it used to is the same fact heard rather than seen. Second, the failure is frequently one or two modules, not forty, and repair options range accordingly: a full new pack, a refurbished pack, or single-module replacement — the last being cheapest and most contentious, since a new module in an old pack ages unevenly too.
Before anyone pays: three checks. The warranty — traction batteries carry the longest warranty on the vehicle, eight years or more in many markets, and this code inside that window is the manufacturer's bill. The data — a battery health report showing per-block voltages tells you whether this is one weak module or general exhaustion, and any competent hybrid workshop can produce it. The fan — a clogged battery cooling fan (P0A7E) makes packs age years early, and fitting a replacement pack behind a blocked fan buys the same failure twice.
