P203E: Reductant Level Sensor A Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
What to do
Try to notice when the reading misbehaves — over bumps, when cornering, on cold mornings, or in wet weather. That pattern is genuinely the most useful thing you can bring to the garage, because an intermittent fault that will not show itself on a ramp is otherwise very hard to pin down.
Ask for the connector and wiring under the vehicle to be inspected and moved while the signal is watched, rather than the sensor simply being replaced. Intermittent faults on this circuit are frequently connections.
Mention if the tank has ever been overfilled or filled from an open container, since dried reductant leaves a hard white deposit that makes the float stick and release unpredictably.
The car will drive normally for now, but the emissions system escalates if the fault persists.
What this code means
The reductant level signal is jumping around or dropping out rather than failing cleanly.
Intermittent is a description of behaviour rather than of a part, and it changes the method entirely. A circuit that fails cleanly can be found with a meter; one that works while you test it cannot — so the diagnosis has to reproduce the fault rather than search for it.
On a level sensor there is a mechanical explanation that has nothing wrong with it at all, and it should be ruled out first. Fluid sloshes. A tank on a vehicle going round a roundabout or up a kerb genuinely does have a moving surface, and level readings are normally heavily damped in software to hide that. A sensor whose damping has been defeated — or a tank with a broken baffle — produces erratic readings honestly.
Where the movement is electrical, the usual suspects apply and location decides them. This sensor is under the vehicle: a connector that has corroded or filled with water, a harness chafed against the tank strap or underbody, or a terminal that has lost its grip and makes contact until the next bump.
Reductant crystallisation deserves specific mention here, because it is unique to this system. Fluid that has dried on a float or a sensing element leaves a hard white deposit that makes the mechanism stick and release unpredictably — which reads exactly like an electrical intermittent and is not one.
Record when it happens. Rough roads, cornering, cold mornings and wet weather each point at a different one of those causes.
