P2186: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
What to do
Symptoms come and go — fans cycling oddly, occasional rough running, economy that varies for no clear reason. Ask for the connector to be opened and inspected rather than the sensor simply replaced. Corrosion or dried coolant residue in the plug is the most common cause here and is far cheaper to put right than a part fitted on suspicion, which frequently changes nothing because the connector it plugs into is the fault.
What this code means
The second coolant sensor reading jumps or drops out rather than changing smoothly. Coolant temperature has real thermal inertia — an engine's coolant cannot change by twenty degrees in a fraction of a second — so any step change the module sees is an electrical event, not a thermal one, and that is what this code catches.
Almost all of these are connections rather than sensors. A coolant sensor lives in a hot, vibrating, chemically hostile place, and the failure modes reflect it: a connector that has become loose as its plastic aged and lost tension, corrosion on the terminals, or coolant weeping past the sensor's seal into the connector body, where it bridges the pins intermittently as it evaporates and returns.
That last one is worth looking for specifically, because it is common, it is cheap to correct, and it explains a fault that comes and goes with no pattern the driver can describe. A connector with dried coolant residue in it has been telling this story for some time.
Wiggling the harness with the reading displayed is the standard test and usually finds it in minutes — which is worth asking for, because an intermittent fault that is not present when the car is inspected otherwise leads to a sensor being replaced on suspicion.
