P2183: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance

What to do

Check the coolant level first, and have the system checked for leaks — a sensor exposed to air rather than coolant produces this code and no part will fix it. Beyond that, this can be a slowly drifting sensor or a genuine cooling system problem, and the two need separating before anything is replaced. The car will usually drive normally in the meantime.

What this code means

The second coolant temperature sensor is producing a reading that is electrically valid but does not make sense — usually because it disagrees with the first sensor, or with the temperature the module expects given how long the engine has been running.

A disagreement between two coolant sensors is not automatically a sensor fault, and that is the interesting part. The two are deliberately placed where the coolant is at different temperatures. A gap between them is normal and expected; the module knows what gap to expect for the conditions. So this code fires when the gap is wrong, and the gap can be wrong for reasons that have nothing to do with either sensor:

  • A thermostat stuck open keeps coolant moving through the radiator continuously, so the temperature drop across it is smaller than it should be under load and larger than it should be at warm-up.
  • Low coolant leaves one sensor reading air rather than liquid, which reads wildly and inconsistently — often the first sign of a slow leak, ahead of any warning light.
  • A blocked radiator core produces too large a drop across a partially flowing radiator, or too small a one if flow has stopped.

The cheap check comes before any part: coolant level and condition. A sensor sitting in an air pocket cannot report a temperature that does not exist where it is, and no amount of testing the sensor will reveal that.

A sensor genuinely drifting is also common enough with age. Thermistors do not usually fail open or short; they slowly read a few degrees off, which is exactly the kind of error that fails a correlation check and passes every other test.
