Cause
Low coolant level
Coolant is not consumed, so a level that has fallen has leaked. The temperature gauge cannot warn you reliably: once the level drops past the sensor it sits in air and steam, which carry heat away far worse than liquid, so it can read normal while the metal overheats.
The earliest free sign is a heater gone lukewarm, because the matrix is the highest point in the circuit and the first place air collects.
Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
