P2209: NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1
What to do
The car drives normally. Ask for the charging system and battery to be checked before the sensor is condemned — heater output falls steeply with supply voltage, so a weak alternator or battery produces heater performance faults on healthy sensors, and often on several at once. That is a much cheaper repair than the part it gets mistaken for.
What this code means
The heater sense circuit is producing a valid reading that does not make sense — most often because the heater is not reaching, or not holding, the temperature the module commanded.
Since the sense line reports element temperature by way of resistance, as set out at P2208, this code is the module observing that its heating is not working as intended. The interesting cases are the ones where nothing electrical is wrong at all:
- The exhaust is cooling the sensor faster than the heater can compensate. Sustained high-speed running moves a great deal of gas past a sensor that is, at low load, cooler than the heater's target.
- The supply voltage is low. A heater is a resistive load, and its output falls with the square of the applied voltage — so a charging fault or a tired battery reduces heating power sharply while every circuit still tests as continuous. That is the P0562 argument, and it belongs on the checklist here.
- The element is ageing. Resistance drifts over a long service life, so the relationship between resistance and temperature that the module relies on slowly stops holding.
The voltage check is the cheap one and comes first, because a marginal charging system produces faults across several heated sensors at once and is frequently diagnosed as several failing sensors.
