What to do

The car drives normally and this is the less severe of the heater faults — the heater itself may still be working, but the module can no longer confirm it. Still worth repairing, because an unregulated heater is harder on the sensor over time and this is an expensive part to shorten the life of. Corrosion in the connector is the usual cause and is cheap to correct.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit through which the module monitors the NOx sensor heater, as distinct from the circuit through which it drives it.

The control/sense distinction is the point of this sub-family and is worth understanding once, because it recurs across five codes. Control is an output: the module switches power to the heater. Sense is an input: the module measures what the heater is actually doing. Those are separate circuits with separate failure modes, and a fault in one says nothing about the other.

What makes sense worth having at all is that the heater's own resistance is a thermometer. The element's resistance rises predictably with temperature, so measuring it tells the module how hot the sensing element actually is — which is exactly what it needs to know, and which no amount of switching the heater on would reveal. That turns heating from an open-loop guess into a closed loop: drive, measure, adjust. It is also how the module implements the careful cold-start ramp described at P2205, since a gentle warm-up is only possible if the current temperature is known.

Losing the sense circuit is therefore less severe than losing control, which is why this code is graded below P2205: the heater may well still be working, but the module can no longer verify it or regulate it precisely. It falls back to a fixed strategy, which is cruder and, over time, harder on the element.

A fault here is usually in the wiring or the connector rather than in the sensor, because the sense line is a measurement path carrying almost no current — so it fails through corrosion and poor contact rather than through overload.
