AdBlue or exhaust fluid warning
The exhaust fluid warning on a modern diesel — AdBlue, DEF or urea, depending on the market. It is a consumable rather than a fault, and the warning is usually accompanied by a countdown in miles or kilometres. What surprises people is the ending: emissions law requires the vehicle to refuse to restart once the tank is empty, so this is one of the few dashboard warnings that ends in a car that will not start while nothing whatsoever is broken. Refill it before the countdown gets short; the fluid is inexpensive and sold at fuel stations. Never put anything else in the tank.

This is a consumable running out, not a fault — and it is one of the very few dashboard warnings that ends in a car which will not start while nothing whatsoever is broken. Emissions law requires the vehicle to enforce its own reductant supply, so the sequence runs warning, countdown, reduced power, and finally a refusal to restart.
The distances are generous if the warning is read. German references describe a staged system: a first warning with roughly 2,400 km of range left, an urgent one near 1,000 km, and a final stage around 500 km where the message says explicitly that the engine will not start in X kilometres. The fluid is inexpensive and sold at fuel stations, so the only expensive part of this warning is postponing it.
Two things ruin an otherwise trivial job. Putting anything other than the correct fluid in the tank — water, screenwash, diesel — contaminates the whole system and can mean replacing the tank, pump and dosing module. And fluid of the wrong concentration or of poor quality produces sensor faults that look like component failures, which is why a technician's first move on a repeat problem is to draw a sample and check the urea strength with a refractometer.
A warning that does not clear after refilling means a fault, not a level — that case belongs with the countdown brief in this lane, because it is the same sequence driven by a NOx sensor or a blocked dosing injector rather than by an empty tank.
