P2258: Secondary Air Injection System Control A Circuit High
What to do
The car drives normally; emissions in the first minute of a cold start are affected, which can fail a test. Ask for the relay and its supply to be checked before the pump is condemned — the relay switches a heavy current briefly on every cold start, which wears contacts, and it is far cheaper than the pump.
What this code means
The first secondary air control circuit reads above its valid range — an open circuit, a short to supply, or a relay that is not completing the pump's circuit. The system and its cold-start-only operation are described at P2257.
An open circuit is the more common of these and often lies in the relay rather than the pump. These relays switch a substantial current for a short burst on every cold start, which is exactly the duty that pits and welds contacts over time, and a relay is a fraction of the price of the pump it feeds.
