Loud buzzing or whirring after a cold start

A loud buzz, whirr or vacuum-cleaner drone that starts with the engine from cold, runs for somewhere between thirty seconds and two minutes, and then stops — every time, on a cold morning, and never once the engine is warm. That is almost always the secondary air pump doing exactly its job: it blows air into the exhaust while the engine is cold so the catalytic converter reaches working temperature faster. It is genuinely loud, it alarms people who have just bought the car, and on a healthy vehicle it is nothing at all.
