Air conditioning not engaging

The compressor does not run when air conditioning is selected. Sometimes an air conditioning fault, but the control module will also inhibit the compressor when it does not trust the ambient temperature reading.

What this usually means

The compressor does not run, and the useful question is whether the system has decided not to run it or cannot. Those are different faults and the control side is checked first because it is free.

The module will inhibit the compressor when it does not trust the ambient temperature reading — most systems refuse to engage below roughly 3 to 5 °C to avoid icing and compressor damage, so an ambient sensor reading falsely cold produces a system that never works even in summer. That sensor sits in the airflow at the front of the car where it is exposed to damage and to radiated heat from the road, and it is a common and inexpensive failure.

Refrigerant pressure is the other inhibit and it is the commonest genuine cause. The system will not engage the clutch if pressure is below the low-pressure switch's threshold, because running a compressor without refrigerant means running it without the oil the refrigerant carries. So a system that has leaked down refuses to engage rather than blowing warm — and since air conditioning is sealed and should never need topping up, a system low on gas has a leak by definition.

Then the ordinary electrical population: the fuse, the relay, the clutch coil, the pressure sensor and the control request itself. Command the compressor on a scan tool — one that engages on command has proved its clutch and supply, and moved the fault to the request.

And an engine that refuses the request is real. The compressor is a large load, so a management system already struggling at idle may decline it deliberately.

  • Never engages, whatever the weather

    Likely cause
    Refrigerant pressure below the switch threshold — the system protects the compressor by refusing
    How to confirm it
    Read live refrigerant pressure, or gauge it. A system that is low has a leak by definition, since it is sealed.
    What fixes it
    Find the leak with dye or an electronic detector, repair it, then evacuate and recharge to the plated weight.
  • Refuses in mild or cold weather, works when hot

    Likely cause
    Ambient temperature inhibit working correctly — most systems refuse below roughly 3 to 5 °C
    How to confirm it
    Check the ambient reading the climate system displays against reality. Correct behaviour in genuine cold is not a fault.
    What fixes it
    No repair where the reading is right. Renew the ambient sensor where it reads falsely cold.
  • Ambient display reads far below actual temperature

    Likely cause
    The ambient sensor — mounted at the front where it is exposed, and a common inexpensive failure
    How to confirm it
    Compare the displayed figure against a thermometer after the car has stood. Radiated heat makes it read high in traffic, not low.
    What fixes it
    Renew the sensor. The compressor inhibit lifts immediately.
  • Compressor engages when commanded on a scan tool

    Likely cause
    The request rather than the compressor — clutch and supply have just proved themselves
    How to confirm it
    This is the decisive split. Then check the pressure switch, the ambient signal and the control module's request.
    What fixes it
    Repair the request path. Do not fit a compressor that has just run on command.
  • No response at all, no click from the clutch

    Likely cause
    Fuse, relay, clutch coil or wiring
    How to confirm it
    Check for supply at the clutch during a request. Supply present with no engagement is the coil or its air gap.
    What fixes it
    Renew the fuse, relay or clutch. Some clutches have an adjustable air gap that widens with wear.
  • Engaged until recently, then stopped with a warning about engine performance

    Likely cause
    The engine declining a large load it cannot currently support at idle
    How to confirm it
    Read engine codes as well as climate ones. The compressor is several horsepower arriving in one step.
    What fixes it
    Repair the engine fault; the compressor request returns with it.
