P2686: Actuator Supply Voltage C Circuit High

What to do

Expect warning lights and probably reduced power. Driving gently to a workshop is fine, but do not leave it for weeks — parts on this circuit may be powered when they should be off, and some do not tolerate that indefinitely.

Ask for the charging system to be checked first — it takes two minutes and rules out a lot. If the alternator or its regulator is pushing the vehicle's voltage too high, every supply in the car reads high at once and this code is a symptom rather than the problem. A tired battery can contribute too, since a healthy one absorbs voltage spikes that a worn one does not.

Mention it if the car has recently been jump started or had a new battery, and mention whether other electrical oddities have appeared — bulbs failing, other modules complaining. Those all point the same way.

As with the rest of this family, do not replace the parts that the other codes name.

What this code means

The third actuator supply rail reads above its valid range — a short to a higher supply, or a rail live when the module commanded it off.

The rail concept is at P2669; the reasoning about a rail stuck live leaving actuators energised when nothing intends them to be, the chafed-loom mechanism that puts a supply wire onto a signal wire, and the charging-system check that should come before any dismantling are all at P2671 and apply here without change.

The rail-comparison test from P2685 is especially worth running on this code, because overvoltage has a shared cause that a single-rail view will miss entirely. If all three actuator supply rails are reading high at once, the vehicle's whole electrical system is the suspect, not the module — a charging system pushing too high a voltage does exactly that, and so does a jump start done wrongly or a battery in poor enough condition that it no longer damps the alternator's output.

That is a measurement at the battery taking two minutes, and it is the difference between a regulator or a battery and a module. Check it before anyone opens a loom.
