Splits drive between front and rear axles on a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and on most also offers a low range for steep or slow work. Shifted by an electric or vacuum actuator on modern vehicles rather than by a lever, which introduces the failure that dominates its fault codes: actuators and shift mechanisms seize from disuse. A vehicle that has spent years on tarmac in two-wheel drive is the most likely one to find its four-wheel drive no longer engages, which is an argument for exercising the system occasionally rather than saving it for when it is needed.
