U0101: Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module
What to do
Expect the car to be stuck in one gear — it will drive, slowly and without changing gear, which is the transmission protecting itself rather than a sign it has broken. Drive it gently to somewhere it can be looked at rather than continuing a long journey.
The important point: this is a communication fault, and limp mode here does not mean the gearbox has failed. A genuinely failed transmission normally announces itself first — slipping, banging into gear, noise, burnt-smelling fluid. If the gearbox felt completely normal until the light came on, that is a strong argument against a mechanical problem.
Do not agree to a transmission overhaul or replacement on the strength of this code. Ask for the module's power and earth connections, its connector and the network wiring to be checked first. On many vehicles this module sits on or inside the gearbox where it gets hot and shaken, so its connector is a genuine suspect.
What this code means
The transmission control module has stopped being heard from on the data network. The reasoning about what a lost communication code does and does not mean is at U0100 and applies to every code in this family.
What makes this one distinctive is how much of the transmission's behaviour depends on messages rather than on its own sensors. It has its own speed sensors and pressure sensors, but the engine torque figure it schedules shifts and clutch pressures around arrives over the network — which is the conversation the P2637 family describes. Lose that and the module is working from half the information it was designed to use.
The response is to default to something safe: a fixed gear, usually third or fourth, with no shifting at all. The car moves, pulls away sluggishly and will not exceed a modest speed. That is protection rather than damage, and it is the same limp behaviour a serious internal fault produces — which is why a network fault here gets diagnosed as a failing gearbox.
The check that separates them costs nothing: a genuinely failed transmission usually announces itself mechanically — slipping, harsh engagement, noise, burnt fluid. Limp mode with a transmission that felt perfect until the moment it appeared, and a stored communication code, is a wiring and power question rather than a mechanical one.
