U0425: Invalid Data Received From Auxiliary Heater Control Module

What to do

The car drives normally. The auxiliary or parking heater will not run, and that refusal is deliberate — a fuel-burning heater is heavily supervised, and when it cannot verify what it is doing it shuts down rather than continuing. It will not run unattended with a fault, which is the right way round.

Expect a cold cabin and slow warm-up in winter, which on a diesel can be a genuine inconvenience rather than a small one.

Two things worth asking for.

Does it need a lockout reset? These heaters lock themselves out after several failed attempts to light, on purpose, so they do not keep pumping fuel into a hot exhaust. That reset needs a scan tool, and skipping it leaves the heater dead even after the real fault is fixed.

Has the burner been serviced? These units soot up, particularly if used for short runs, and a burner that cannot light cleanly is the commonest actual cause. Cleaning it is the repair — not a new module, which is the expensive answer to a maintenance problem.

An auxiliary heater is a small burner that burns the vehicle's own fuel to make heat, fitted to diesels whose engines produce too little waste heat to warm a cabin quickly, and to vehicles offering pre-heating before the driver gets in. The fact that it burns fuel, often while the vehicle is unattended, is why this code is filed as serious rather than as a comfort matter.

These heaters are supervised carefully for exactly that reason. The module monitors flame presence, combustion temperature, the glow element, the fuel pump and the exhaust, and it shuts down on anything it cannot verify. So an implausible report normally results in the heater refusing to run — which is protection, and the correct behaviour.

What must not happen is a heater that runs unsupervised, and the vehicle is built so it cannot. That is worth saying plainly to anybody worried about a fuel-burning device with a fault: the failure direction is off, not on.

Two practical points follow.

A heater that has locked out often needs a deliberate reset rather than just a code clear. Many designs lock out permanently after a number of failed ignition attempts, specifically to stop repeated attempts pumping unburnt fuel into a hot exhaust. A scan tool reset is part of the repair, and one skipped leaves the heater dead on perfectly good hardware.

And soot is the usual real cause. The corpus already names soot build-up in the heater burner — these units coke up, especially where they are used for short periods or run on poor fuel, and a burner that will not light cleanly reports combustion values that cannot be reconciled. Servicing the burner is the repair, not replacing the module.
