U0468: Invalid Data Received From Fuel Cell Control Module

What to do

Get this looked at by a workshop with specific hydrogen fuel cell training, and do not let anyone else open anything. That is not caution for its own sake. The system runs at several hundred volts and stores hydrogen at very high pressure, and neither is survivable to get wrong.

What you will probably notice is that the car still drives normally but the range has collapsed. That is the designed response: when the fuel cell reports something the car cannot trust, it shuts the stack down and runs on the small buffer battery instead.

Take that seriously rather than as an inconvenience. That battery exists to smooth out demand and recover braking energy, not to move the car any distance. It will run out, and hydrogen refuelling is not on every corner — so plan the shortest route to somewhere the car can be collected from, rather than continuing to where you were going.

Do not attempt any check under the bonnet or near the tanks yourself. A hydrogen leak cannot be seen or smelt, and burns with a flame that is almost invisible in daylight. If you smell anything unusual, hear hissing, or a hydrogen warning appears, stop, get everyone out, move away from the vehicle and call for professional help.

This code belongs to a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, and the safety paragraph comes before anything else because two of the hazards here are of a different order to anything elsewhere in the corpus.

A fuel cell stack generates several hundred volts of direct current whenever it is running, and it cannot simply be switched off the way a battery can be disconnected — it produces electricity as long as hydrogen and air are supplied to it. The vehicle also stores hydrogen at several hundred times atmospheric pressure, in tanks whose fittings are not serviceable by a general workshop. Hydrogen leaks are invisible, odourless, and burn with a flame that is nearly invisible in daylight.

So: do not attempt anything on this system, and do not let a workshop without specific fuel cell training and equipment attempt it either. That is not a formality. The orange cabling and the tank shielding mark systems that kill people who treat them as ordinary.

What the code itself means. The stack controller publishes cell voltages, stack temperature, hydrogen supply pressure, air flow and purge state, and the drive system checks all of it against what the vehicle's demand implies. An implausible figure produces a designed response: the stack is shut down and the vehicle runs on its buffer battery alone.

That gives the symptom worth recognising — a vehicle that still drives, quite normally, with drastically reduced range and no way to extend it. The buffer battery is small; it exists to smooth demand and recover braking energy, not to propel the vehicle any distance. A driver who treats reduced range as an inconvenience will be stopped by it, and hydrogen refuelling is not available on most routes.

So the practical instruction is to plan the shortest route to somewhere the vehicle can be recovered from, rather than to continue to a destination.
