U0411: Invalid Data Received From Drive Motor Control Module A

What to do

Expect much less power, or the electric drive not working at all. That limiting is deliberate — an electric motor can produce enormous torque instantly, so the car will not act on a torque figure it cannot verify.

Report how the car feels, because it genuinely narrows the fault. A drive that feels rough, jerky or notchy, or a whine that has changed character, points at the position sensor on the motor shaft — the part that tells the controller exactly where the rotor is. That is a different repair from anything electrical elsewhere.

Drive gently and get it seen rather than continuing a long journey. On a hybrid the engine may carry you; on an electric car the remaining performance may be very limited.

Do not investigate anything orange. Orange cabling marks the high-voltage system and those voltages are lethal on contact — and the sensor wiring here runs right alongside it. This needs somebody trained and equipped for high-voltage work.

What this code means

The drive motor control module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for the family's framing and U0292 for what this module does.

On an electric or hybrid vehicle the motor control module publishes the values the whole powertrain is arbitrated around: torque delivered, motor speed, rotor position, temperature and current drawn. The supervisory module at U0293 balances engine and motor using exactly these numbers.

Torque is the value with the most serious implications, and it is why this code sits at high severity. An electric motor can produce very large torque instantly and at any speed, so a torque report that cannot be verified is one the vehicle will not allow to be acted upon. Expect substantially reduced power or a refusal to use the motor at all — which is protection, and is the same reasoning as the throttle supervision at U0408.

Rotor position deserves specific mention because it is the value most often behind this code and it is genuinely hard to fake. A traction motor is commutated electronically: the controller must know exactly where the rotor is, to a fraction of a turn, in order to energise the right windings at the right instant. That comes from a resolver or encoder on the motor shaft. A resolver whose signal has degraded — through heat, vibration or a damaged shielded cable — produces position data that cannot be reconciled with the motor's speed, and the controller correctly refuses to drive on it.

That has a practical consequence worth reporting: a rough, jerky or notchy feel from the drive, or a whine that changes character, points at position feedback rather than at anything electrical elsewhere.

The high-voltage caution stands. Orange cabling, lethal voltages, and the resolver's cable runs alongside it — nothing here is for home investigation.
