The Hyundai Motor Group's mid-size petrol four, in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre forms — fitted to the Elantra, i30, Cee'd, Tucson and Sportage of the 2000s, and the engine that carried the group's volume compacts before the Nu and Gamma families arrived.
Belt-driven and port-injected, with variable valve timing on later members. Its reputation is for durability rather than for any single characteristic failure, which changes the diagnostic posture: an unexplained fault on a Beta is less likely to be a known pattern and more likely to be a genuinely worn component, so ordinary testing beats pattern-matching here.
What does recur is the timing belt interval — this is an interference design — and ignition and sensor wear at high mileage. On cars that have run on poor fuel, carbon in the combustion chamber and on the valves produces knock and misfire complaints that respond to cleaning rather than to parts.
