Toyota's V8 family in 4.6, 5.0 and 5.7 litre forms — the 3UR-FE in the Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser, the 1UR in the Lexus LS and GX, and the 2UR-GSE in the Lexus F cars.

They have a strong durability record and no systemic failure of the kind that defines most engines in this catalogue. The single item worth knowing is the secondary air injection system on the 2007–2013 Tundra and Sequoia, whose pump and valves fail and set a distinctive set of codes — a known, recalled pattern that presents as an emissions fault on cold start and is expensive because of what has to come off to reach it.

Beyond that, the recurring findings are the water pump, the cam-tower and timing-cover sealant weeping at high mileage, and — in the Land Cruiser's case — the consequences of very hard duty in hot climates. As with the 2GR, rear-bank access on the transverse Lexus installations makes routine work a much larger job than it appears.

Cars fitted with this engine

13 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
