The small-displacement petrol family that replaced the EA111 across the whole Volkswagen Group, and the most widely fitted engine in this catalogue — it is under almost every Golf, Polo, Octavia, Ibiza and Leon of the last decade. Displacement is deliberately absent because the family runs from a 1.0 three-cylinder to a 1.5 four; the three-cylinder is a different engine from the four in almost every practical respect.
The belt is wet and internal, and that is the maintenance fact that catches people out. Like Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost, the timing belt runs in engine oil on a fixed interval, and a degrading belt sheds material that can block the oil pickup — so belt failure presents as oil starvation rather than as a timing complaint. Oil specification is not a preference here.
The 1.5 TSI's other well-known trait is not a fault: hesitation or a shunt at low speed on early cars came from a very lean part-load calibration and was addressed in software, so a driveability complaint on one deserves a software-level check before any component is suspected.
