Watch the temperature gauge and treat any climb as genuine — the system that would normally manage cooling is telling you it cannot see part of itself.

Expect the opposite symptom most of the time, though: an engine that runs cold. Slow to warm up, a weak heater, cooling fans running more than usual. That is deliberate — when the car cannot confirm it is controlling cooling, it errs toward too much cooling rather than too little. It is safe, it is thirsty, and it is hard on emissions.

Check the coolant level when the engine is cold, and mention any recent cooling work — a thermostat, a pump, a radiator, a coolant change. Disturbed connectors are a common cause and a cheap fix.

Do not keep driving if the temperature rises. The fail-safe is a design intention, not a promise, and the warning you would normally rely on is part of what has gone quiet.

This range exists because parts stopped being parts.

A lost-communication code at U01xx or U02xx means a control module went silent — a computer, with a processor and a name. This range says the same thing about a coolant pump, a valve, or a sensor, and that sentence only became possible when those components acquired controllers of their own.

Most of them are not on the main CAN bus. They hang off a LIN sub-bus — a single-wire, low-speed network that a master module runs to a chain of small devices, precisely because giving every actuator a full CAN interface would be absurd. LIN is cheap, slow, and has one property that dominates diagnosis: it is a chain.

Which produces the most useful fact about this whole family. The fault is very often not in the part named, and not even in its wiring. A LIN chain shares one wire, one supply and one master:

  • One device silent, the rest talking — the fault is that device or its connector.
  • Several devices on one chain silent together — the fault is the shared wire, the shared supply, or the master module that runs them. Replacing any one of the named parts fixes nothing.

So read every other stored code before touching anything. On this family more than most, the pattern across codes is the diagnosis, and a single code in isolation means something quite different from three that arrived together.

These devices are also, physically, the ones in the worst places — bolted to engines, in wheel arches, under the front bumper. Heat, vibration, salt and water reach them in a way they never reach a module behind a dashboard, so connector corrosion is a leading cause here rather than an afterthought.

Engine cooling stopped being plumbing and became a control system, and that is why a coolant part can go missing from a network.

A wax thermostat and a belt-driven pump had no opinions. Modern thermal management replaces both with devices the engine controller commands: an electric or clutched pump whose speed is chosen, and valves that route coolant to the radiator, the heater, the block or nowhere at all. Holding coolant still in a cold engine warms it minutes faster, which is fuel and emissions; a hybrid uses the same valves to harvest engine heat for the cabin.

Those devices report back, and this code says one stopped.

The module's response is the important part, and it is conservative in the right direction. Losing control of cooling means losing the ability to guarantee the engine will not overheat, so the strategy is to fail toward maximum cooling — pump commanded full, valves biased to the radiator, cooling fans on early. A car that runs cold, takes a long time to warm, has a weak heater and noisy fans is not broken in the way it appears: it is being cooled deliberately because the system cannot verify it is being cooled at all.

That fail-safe is not a guarantee. It depends on the parts defaulting where the designer intended, and a device that is electrically silent may also be mechanically stuck. Watch the temperature gauge and treat any climb as real, because the system that would normally warn you is the one reporting itself unavailable.

A bypass valve is the part that decides whether coolant goes to the radiator at all, and the A designator says there is more than one — larger engines and hybrids route several circuits independently. Its sibling at U0616 is valve B, and the two arriving together points at the shared wire or master rather than at two failed valves.
