Audi R8

Mid-engined and built alongside the Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracán, sharing their aluminium spaceframe and V10 — which is the first useful fact, because Lamborghini information covers a good deal of the driveline. The V8 cars use a dry-sump version of the 4.2 FSI, and its timing chains sit at the flywheel end of the engine, so chain and tensioner wear is an engine-out repair and the correlation codes it sets are worth taking seriously early. The R tronic single-clutch automated manual on early cars is a frequent source of complaints and its clutch-wear and pressure data are the place to start; later S tronic cars are more conventional. Magnetic ride dampers, where fitted, have their own control unit and codes.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
