U0462: Invalid Data Received From Compass Module
What to do
This one is rarely worth worrying about, and it is often free to fix.
The compass in your car reads the earth's magnetic field through a large steel body that has magnetism of its own — and that changes. Fitting a roof rack or a magnetic sign, having body panels replaced, or going through an industrial car wash can all leave it reading wrongly.
Most cars have a calibration procedure for exactly this: drive slowly in two or three complete circles in an open space, away from buildings and other vehicles. Your handbook will say how, and it is worth trying before anyone charges you.
If the calibration does not fix it, mention the satellite navigation. Modern cars work out heading from the compass, the satellite signal and the sensor that measures the car turning, all combined — so the fault can easily be in the aerial or that sensor rather than the compass itself.
Nothing about driving the car depends on this. It affects the display and the navigation, and nothing else.

The most useful thing on this page is that a compass reading wrongly is very often not broken.
A magnetic compass in a vehicle is measuring the earth's field through a large steel object that has a magnetic field of its own, and that field is not constant. It changes when the body is welded, when panels are replaced, when a magnetic sign or a roof rack is fitted, when the car passes through an industrial car wash's rollers, and — a well-known one — after being parked over reinforced concrete or driven repeatedly over a magnetised structure.
So the vehicle carries a calibration procedure, usually driving slowly in two or three complete circles in an open space away from buildings and other cars. A compass that has drifted needs that driving rather than a part, and it is free.
The second thing worth knowing is that a modern heading is not purely magnetic. It is fused with satellite position and the yaw rate sensor — the same sensor the stability system uses — because each is unreliable in a different way: the magnetic reading is disturbed by the environment, the satellite heading is useless when stationary, and the yaw rate drifts over time. Which means an implausible heading can arrive from the antenna or the yaw sensor rather than from the compass at all, and a code naming either of those is the better lead.
The consequence is confined to the display and the navigation system. Nothing about how the vehicle drives depends on knowing which way is north.
