U0124: Lost Communication With Lateral Acceleration Sensor Module
What to do
Expect a stability control warning and a car that otherwise drives normally — the same situation as U0122 and U0123, with the same advice to allow more margin in poor conditions.
If codes for the yaw rate or multi-axis sensor are stored alongside this one, mention it: those sensors are normally in the same small module, so it is one part and one connector rather than several faults. On a car with adaptive suspension you may also notice the ride has changed, since the same signal is used to control it.
What this code means
The lateral acceleration sensor module has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100 and the packaging note at U0123.
Lateral acceleration is sideways force — how hard the car is being pushed towards the outside of a corner. It works alongside yaw rate rather than duplicating it, and the pair together distinguish two situations that look identical to either alone.
A car rotating and generating strong sideways force is cornering hard and gripping. A car rotating with very little sideways force is rotating without gripping, which is a spin. Yaw rate alone cannot tell those apart; adding this measurement can, and that distinction is what lets stability control intervene early rather than after the fact.
On vehicles with air suspension or adaptive dampers the same signal is used again for body control, so this code can take ride comfort features with it.
As at U0123: this sensor usually shares a module with the yaw rate sensor, so codes for both are one part.
