P0B23: Hybrid/EV Battery A Voltage
What to do
Establish which battery the code means before anything else — on many vehicles "A" is not the big expensive one, and the difference between a high-voltage pack and a 12-volt battery is the difference between a specialist visit and an afternoon. Ask the question explicitly; it is the single most useful thing you can do with this code.
What this code means
The voltage of battery A is wrong.
Two things about this code are easy to get wrong, and both are about what it is not.
First, it is not the sense-circuit family. P0B14 and its siblings say the circuit measuring the voltage is faulty; this says the value is wrong. The same physical fault can produce either, and a good diagnosis reads both sets together — but the claims are different, and only this one is about the battery.
Second, and more practically: "A" is not necessarily the traction pack. A modern electrified vehicle carries more than one battery, and the number is growing — the high-voltage pack, a 12-volt system battery, on many designs a 48-volt battery, sometimes a separate one reserved for starting. The letter is a designation the manufacturer assigns, not a universal. So the first job on this code is finding out which battery A means on this vehicle, because the answer decides whether this is a specialist high-voltage job or a battery clamp that needs tightening. Skipping that question is how a loose terminal gets diagnosed as a traction pack.
Once that is settled, the reading itself is judged the way any battery is: against what it should be at that temperature, that state of charge, and that load.
